"I developed the LofaBed because I wanted a comfortable piece of furniture to offer my mother when she came from Philly to visit her grandchildren," explains Wapen. "Neither futons nor Hide-A-Beds were good enough. I wanted her to want to stay longer because she felt as comfortable in my home as she did in her own."
Upon completion of his first design, Wapen went about marketing it as he had in the past, through a network of retail furniture dealers, including Rockaway Bedding in the Washington D.C. to New York City corridor. The problem was the "landed" price, including freight, was simply too high for retailers to be competitive. So Wapen created a website, LofaSofa.com, that offered the LofaBed directly to the North American consumer over the Internet. What he found was a huge audience of customers who not only loved his invention because of its comfort and practicality, but also because they absolutely HATED the bar-in-your back, cumbersome, and skinny mattress mentality of the existing array of sofa sleepers.
LofaBeds are made-to-order in seven sizes, nine arm designs, and over forty upholstery-grade fabrics; granting each piece a unique appeal, tailored specifically to the individual taste of each and every customer. With thousands of possible combinations, and a turnaround time of only one to two weeks, customers are highly likely to find a design that suits them. And Wapen promises that no sale is made without his personal involvement; something he feels is an integral part of the vendor-customer relationship. Thus far, his greatest challenge has been trying to sell a product over the Internet that the buyer cannot see or sample before ordering.
