The growing interest in collectable modern furniture (http://www.furnitureseen.com/) designs is seen in the re-introduction of mid-century designs and new designs that will never be mass produced, Engs says. A limited edition may take the form of a small, fixed number of pieces being produced by hand or in a single production run, a production run with a twist -- a different color or finish -- or the limited production of an archived design that never made it past the prototype stage. The increased popularity in modern furniture may be due to recent record setting auction prices for modern furniture pieces, including Marc Newsome's Lockheed Lounge (1986), which fetched $968,000 in 2006. A chair from the same collection is expected to go for between $1.6 and $2.4 million in an upcoming auction. In another auction, one of two prototype Aqua Tables by Zaha Hadid sold for $296,000.
"Designers that used to be known only within creative communities have become increasingly exposed through museum exhibits, popular shelter publications and growing numbers of modern furniture retailers (http://www.furnitureseen.com/)," Engs says. "A decade ago, a person would be hard pressed to strike up a conversation about a Charles and Ray Eames design -- last year, an Eames Lounge was auctioned off at a Los Angeles grammar school fundraiser, and was well known to most of the 'lay' audience."
